The kit fox is the smallest canid found in North America and in lives in the most arid regions of the Mojave, Sonoran and Chihuahan deserts. About the size of a small cat, kit foxes are slender and elegant with very large ears. They are usually a light gray with black tipped tail. Despite their dainty appearance, desert kit foxes are hardy animals, well adapted for living in the hot, harsh desert habitat. The kit fox is mostly nocturnal, hunting small animals and insects shortly after sunset. If food is scarce, it has been known to eat fruit, especially those of native cactus. Usually monogamous, mated pairs change from year to year, but both partners help with raising the pups.
